PRESENTING THE HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTS CENTRE HIPPOS GOLEGÃ
The High Performance Sports Centre Hippos Golegã is the first of its kind in Portugal for equestrian sports. It is designed to host individual riders as well as national and international teams in preparation for international competitions such as the European and World Championships and the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Located in Golegã, known as the “Horse Capital”, in the heart of Portugal and one hour from Lisbon Airport, this High Performance Sports Centre promotes the preparation of athletes and teams in their mission to represent Portugal in the various International Championships and the physical and psycho-motor accompaniment of high-level athletes.
Equally, the preparation and follow-up of horses was also considered and planned. The medical and veterinary areas were designed for proper diagnosis, follow-up and therapy and also for performance monitoring.
The buildings and equipment were designed according to all equestrian disciplines both nationally and internationally, in accordance with the guidelines of the Portuguese Equestrian Federation and the International Equestrian Federation. It may also be a training ground for athletes, coaches and monitors, judges and other officials.
Nowadays, Golegã is an ideal place for practicing sport in general, with infrastructures and equipment that are above the average of those all over the European Union. The municipality is also related to the EuroEquus Network with Jerez de la Frontera (Spain), Waregem (Belgium), Pardubice (Czech Republic) and Wroclaw (Poland).
FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENTS
TRAINING & TECHNICAL AREA
The equipment has a track of 140×80 meters and another discovered track of 70×40 meters, as well as a track dedicated to the gallop, with turf zone for circuits. In addition to this equipment, we highlight the 2 tracks with mechanical guides + 2 guide tracks, 40 fixed boxes, space for additional 300 boxes, horse showers, veterinary clinic, medical and maintenance rooms, barn and warehouse, parking.
SUPPORT AREA
The High Performance Sports Centre Hippos Golegã can make use of the infrastructures already existing in the municipality, such as swimming pools, a municipal ring, a sports pavilion, a stadium, tennis courts, etc., as well as bar and restaurant, several meeting rooms, 4 apartments, a 40-bed SportHotel with Jacuzzi, Turkish bath and sauna and a 50-bed Training Center for High Performance Athletes.
For the riders there are changing rooms, sanitary facilities, medical and first aid cabinets, a gymnasium and a properly equipped physical support office for the rehabilitation and recovery of athletes, as well as anti-doping control support offices.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Visit Golegã means going through pages of an ancient history, influential of the present. The town is built of reticular streets that emerge from a central square, which integrates three historical buildings: the 16th-century Igreja Matriz, the Pelourinho and the seventeenth-century Palace that is complemented by the Carlos Relvas Studio, “Temple of Photography”.
The photographic studio built between 1871-1875, born from the creative mind of Carlos Relvas, was a work carried out with the specific intention of celebrating and developing the photographic activity.
Of the historical and monumental patrimony of the Municipality we have to highlight the Manor of the Quinta de Santo António (17th century), which belonged to the family of São João de Brito, the Manor of Quinta do Salvador (18th century) General Headquarters of Junot, in 1807, the Chapel of Saint Anthony and the Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels (17th century). The Chapel of São João da Ventosa (16th century), the Igreja Matriz (16th-18th century), the São José Chapel (16th century), the Solar dos Serrões (17th century) and the the Palácio da Broa (19th century).
