HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTS CENTRE IN MAIA
PRESENTING THE HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTS CENTRE IN MAIA/HIGHSPORTUGAL
The High Performance Sports Centre in Maia results from the evolution and improvement of a sports structure built in 1987 and has since served Portuguese athletics. Since its foundation, the sports complex in Maia has been decisive to all the athletes living in Portugal’s north. This infrastructure is part of the Portuguese Network of High Performance Sports Centres/HIGHSPORTUGAL.
An improved athletics track and training field, as well as four new tennis courts, were part of the infrastructural renovation that culminated with the inauguration of the High Performance Sports Centre de Maia.
The High Performance Sports Centre in Maia, placed on the sports complex of the municipality, currently provides sports services, not only for athletics, but also for tennis and gymnastics.
Besides all the conditions and equipment needed to the various modalities, athletes, technical teams and staff also benefit from a relationship of proximity and cooperation by the staff of the center, which is reflected in the preparation and training.
This equipment has a technical team properly trained by the Faculty of Sports of the University of Porto and the Instituto Superior da Maia, each corresponding to an area of expertise, according to their specialization.
The investments on the High Performance Sports Centre in Maia have been considerable in recent years. High-performance athletes, teams, technical staff and sponsors can find in this equipment the best training conditions, essential for a better performance.
Since 2014, the year Maia was the European City of Sport, the quantity of sport events has almost doubled, as a result of the added value that sports infrastructures ensure, as well as the excellence of the existing accessibility and means of transportation. Currently, there are more than 200 sport events, and the majority take place in the High Performance Sports Centre.
FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENTS
TRAINING & TECHNICAL AREA
The High Performance Sports Centre in Maia is prepared for three Olympic and Paralympic sport modalities, each one having a fully equipped area, with the best conditions for the High Performance training.
The following infrastructures are part of the centre:
- Estádio Prof. Dr. José Vieira de Carvalho;
- Municipal Tennis Complex;
- Municipal Gymnastics Complex;
- Maia Municipal Pavilion.
TRAINING & TECHNICAL AREA
The Estádio Prof. Dr. José Vieira de Carvalho has 1 football field with natural grass, the official dimensions for professional football and a capacity of 12 000 seats; 1 soccer field with artificial turf, with the minimum dimensions for the practice of football at an official level; 5 locker rooms; conference rooms, athletics track with 8 lanes, as well as areas for throws and jumps; and artificial lighting.
TRAINING & TECHNICAL AREA
The Municipal Tennis Complex has 3 outdoor clay tennis courts; 2 outdoor hard tennis courts; 5 indoor tennis courts, with a central court with capacity for 1500 spectators, VIP zone, individual seats for the press and a retractable roof; 2 locker rooms with capacity for 40 people; service rooms; and a public dinning and bar area.
TRAINING & TECHNICAL AREA
The Municipal Complex for Gymnastics is classified as one of the five best in Europe for the practice of artistic, rhythmic and acrobatic gymnastics, and has been the stage for the most diverse events and sports activities. It has all the equipment for training and events. Besides gymnastics, you can also find a considerable variety of activities, such as fitness, cardio fitness, bodybuilding and climbing.
