HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTS CENTRE IN MONTEMOR-O-VELHO
PRESENTING THE HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTS CENTRE IN MONTEMOR-O-VELHO/HIGHSPORTUGAL
Opened in 2002, the High Performance Sports Centre in Montemor-o-Velho is designed to accommodate canoeing, rowing, open water swimming and triathlon and is part of the Portuguese Network of High Performance Sports Centres/HIGHPORTUGAL.
It is part of the Portuguese program for High Performance in sports, with unique infrastructures that benefit from the particular conditions of Baixo Mondego and are an excellent place for training and competition at international level. This quality standard is a prime focus for attracting athletes and fans, promoting the region as a sport tourism destination all year long.
The water plan, which is 2,000 meters long, 135 meters wide and 3.5 meters deep, also has a return track, a heating and cooling canal, a cycle path along the water, a technical track to support training, hangars, changing rooms, gymnasium, sauna and multipurpose rooms.
The High Performance Sports Centre in Montemor-o-Velho offers excellent conditions for the practice of canoeing, open water swimming, rowing and triathlon at a High Performance level. The typology of the track – class A – and the excellent conditions (natural and built) for training and competition make this HPSC an attraction for athletes and fans of nautical sports. The proximity to the Atlantic coast enhances this territory as the epicentre of nautical tourism.
The High Performance Sports Centre in Montemor-o-Velho is located at the heart of Portugal, 25 minutes away from Coimbra, 15 from Figueira da Foz, 2 hours from Lisbon and one and a half hours from Porto. The good rail and road accessibility gives the municipality a perfect geographical centrality.
Located in the heart of Baixo Mondego, Montemor-o-Velho is a territory dominated by the castle and the river Mondego. Centred on a strategic axis between Coimbra, Figueira da Foz and Aveiro, Montemor emerges as a link between the city of education and health (Coimbra), the city of light, beaches, mountains and the casino (Figueira da Foz) and the city of “ria” (lagoon) and innovation (Aveiro).
FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENTS
TRAINING & TECHNICAL AREA
The High Performance Sports Centre in Montemor-o-Velho includes the Nautical Centre, anchored on the banks of the valley between Formoselha and Montemor, and the Athletics Track for the Triathlon training. This track, which is downstream on the right bank, reinforces the functional profile of the Padre Estêvão Cabral riverbed associated with sports practice and consolidates the articulation between the infrastructures supporting High Performance sport and the urban space of the town.
SUPPORT AREA
The state-of-the-art facilities are composed of a gym designed for High Performance training and equipped with the latest and best equipment to increase training performance; a jacuzzi that through its system of pumps and water jets allows muscle toning after exercise, reduces pain through the release of endorphins, and with temperatures starting at 38 degrees water exerts a relaxing feeling on the body that makes rest longer and more repairing.
SPECIFICATIONS
You can also count with a training room with capacity for 100 trainees and with multimedia equipment to guarantee the best conditions for training sessions. It has 100 chairs with writing tables, 10 retractable tables and a meeting table with chairs; 3 technical offices that can be used by coaches and managers to plan the training or to organise tournaments; a multipurpose room usually used as a catering area in the biggest events, placed on a highest level and with a balcony overlooking the track.
OTHER TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT
- Finish tower: located on the finish line of the nautical track, it is a spot for observation of the athletes, used by the judges to verify if the athletes are following the rules; it has a photo-finish system;
- 2 medical offices both equipped with an automated external defibrillator;
- 1 room for anti-doping control;
- Control tower at 200m, 500m and 1000m: the distances you can race in this nautical track, which has control towers at those distances;
- Cycle path and technical track: available along the nautical track, allowing the coach to follow the athletes along the 2000m;
- 16 hangars: of 24x6m each, to store boats and other materials, each having fixed L-shaped brackets and the possibility of placing removable brackets for the correct storage of boats;
- 3 catamarans with motor for 2 people each;
- Mechanical start system for canoeing;
- Buoys;
- Metallic structure;
- Pneumatic cables and compressors.
