HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTS CENTRE IN POCINHO/HIGHSPORTUGAL
PRESENTING THE HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTS CENTRE IN POCINHO
The High Performance Sports Centre in Pocinho, promoted by the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, is dedicated to the practice of nautical sports, especially rowing and canoeing and it’s part of the Portuguese Network of High Performance Sports Centres/HIGHSPORTUGAL.
Its location at the Douro Valley, part of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro region, which was considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001, provided the project’s architect, Fernando Álvaro Andrade, with guidelines for its development, similar to the Douro vineyards in different levels along the river and with a great plasticity of forms.
With capacity for 159 athletes, it has 3 different areas: a training area (gym, indoor swimming pool, sauna and Jacuzzi, treatment rooms, medical offices), a social area (cafeteria, social rooms, auditorium) and an accommodation area (dormitories).
The construction of this HPSC aimed at: developing the practice of nautical sports, especially rowing; promoting the international projection of Portuguese sports; contributing to an increase of the practice of adaptive sports; contributing to the territory enhancement of the region; enhancing an area that has a privileged location in terms of easy access by road, train and boat; attracting sport tourism; putting the High performance Centre in the world architecture guides.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN POCINHO
The only municipality in the country with two World Heritage sites – the Rock Engravings and the Alto Douro Vinhateiro – V. N. de Foz Côa is located in Guarda District and has a total area of 398.2 km, with a population around 7,312 inhabitants. Right at the heart of Alto Douro Vinhateiro, this plateau appears where the Douro River meets the Côa River.
There are several farms with wine production and ecotourism projects where the visitor can be amazed with a new way of getting to know the Douro and Côa valleys, taste different types of wine and enjoy amazing meals in the countryside. There are organised tours according to the availability of wine and nature lovers.
WHAT TO DO
The Senhora da Veiga Vessel is a symbol of the Douro River’s history. It is a replica of the traditional Portuguese rabelo boats that was used to transport the fine wine barrels from Alto Douro to the Gaia cellars, and its visitors will have a mix of sensorial experiences: know the Douro river and taste the traditional “migas de peixe à moleiro”, fried river fish in escabeche sauce, as well as taste the wines of the Upper Douro River.
At the Côa Museum, which is fully integrated into the landscape, you can contemplate the oldest graphic memory of mankind, the undeniable artistic quality of Palaeolithic art, travel through time back to 25,000 years ago, interpret the demonstration of social, economic and spiritual life of the first ancestor of mankind and visit the largest concentration in the world of open-air Palaeolithic rock engravings in the Archaeological Park of the Côa Valley.
The gastronomy of the region is rich and varied, the products of the region being its greatest asset. Fried fish or fish in escabeche sauce, fish soup, roasted goat or game meat dishes, such as wild boar, rabbit or partridge with sorrel or asparagus omelette are mandatory. For dessert, the delicacies are mostly almond-based.
